Jan Dunin Wasowicz

Jan’s practice focuses on cross-border compliance and enforcement, multi-jurisdictional internal and government investigations, as well as international dispute resolution. Fully trained in the civil and common law systems and with a background in policy, Jan has significant multi-sectoral experience advising on compliance with economic sanctions and trade controls from both EU and U.S. perspectives. Jan is a thought leader in EU sanctions. He was named among the best investigations lawyers in the world to Global Investigations Review (GIR)’s 2024 40 under 40 list. Jan advises clients on the full spectrum of regulatory compliance, implementation and enforcement matters, including risk assessments, design and evaluation of sanctions and export control compliance programs, merges & acquisitions, contractual negotiation and reviews, transaction due diligence, licensing, internal investigations, remediation and related disputes. Jan has particular experience with enhanced sanctions and export controls due diligence, particularly in the context of detecting and preventing circumvention risks or evaluating other high-risk projects or transactions. He has unique experience preventing sanctions violations in third countries. Jan also has experience assisting clients in connection with pre-litigation matters and disputes arising out of sanctions and export controls, including in international arbitration. Concerning his anti-corruption practice, Jan has experience navigating the multi-jurisdictional and international aspects of compliance assessments and internal investigations. He has designed and audited compliance programs, performed internal investigations and due diligence reviews on third-party agents and joint-venture partners around the world, including in connection with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC), the French Parquet National Financier (PNF) and anticorruption agency (AFA), the U.K. Serious Fraud Office (SFO), as well as multilateral development bank (MDB) and export credit agencies (ECAs) inquiries. Jan speaks and writes extensively on subjects related to sanctions and export controls. He has been quoted and has appeared in several leading media. Jan is an Associate Fellow of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI)’s Centre for Financial Crime and Security Studies (CFCS) and engages with the authorities in the EU on sanctions policy. He has lectured on EU sanctions at Sciences Po Law School, the European University Institute, and the Sorbonne. Prior to founding Bennink Dunin-Wasowicz in 2024, Jan was partner and co-chair of the sanctions & export controls practice group of a New York international law firm, based in the Paris office.

Stuart Gamester has been building and managing Ethics & Compliance processes for over 25 years in various multinational companies and also with Government Legislators, such as the Export Control Organisation and HMRC. Highly experienced in Import / Export controls, Sanctions, AML, ABC, with a UK/EU/US/Asia angle. Stuart has developed and managed restricted party / KYC screening tools, built compliance processes and systems for trade / customs, risk assessment and management and is a qualified auditor (working with UK Government and multinational defence, pharmaceutical and oil & gas companies). Out of work Stuart still tries to play cricket and is a Kent Cricket Club qualified coach, coaching at youth level.
Susan Thompson

Susan Thompson is the ICRM EU Sanctions Regulations Head. In her role, Susan is responsible for overseeing financial sanctions compliance across Europe. Susan advises senior management on critical sanctions risks and geopolitical developments, ensures Citi’s adherence to the Citi’s Sanctions policies, and manages the execution of issue escalation and strategic initiatives from an EU perspective. As part of her role, she also engages with local and European regulators and National Competent Authorities (NCAs) across Europe and actively participates in peer forums. Susan joined Citi in 2001, holding various positions within Citi before transitioning to Citi’s Sanctions organization in 2015. Prior to Citi, she gained experience at Ulster Bank and AIG. Susan is a member of the Association of Compliance Officers Ireland (ACOI) and the Association of Certified Sanctions Specialists (ACSS).
Interested in joining the task force?
We accept EU or UK-based professionals from private or public sector to serve on this Taskforce. The scope of this volunteer activity is approximately 12 months, and term of service is for 1 year, potentially renewable. The time commitment is manageable (approximately 4 hours per quarter) and spread throughout the year. We plan to have quarterly coordination calls of 60-90 minutes. Task Force Member Qualifications
- Required: a member of ACSS (or planning to become a member once confirmed)
- Have 5+ years of experience in managing an area of sanctions or export controls topics
- Have worked for or still works for a EU or UK government agency or international organization with European mandate or works in “Government Relations” role in a private sector.
- Is well connected in the community to help make new connections
- Is a supporter of ACSS educational programming (or sends staff)
